Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a significant setback for the Grand Alliance in Bihar, three legislators, including one from RJD and two from Congress, have defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), intensifying the challenges for the opposition ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The departure of RJD MLA Sangeeta Kumari and Congress MLAs Murari Gautam and Siddharth to BJP marks a concerning development for the Grand Alliance, raising uncertainties for their electoral prospects. This shift in allegiance strengthens the Nitish Kumar-led NDA coalition government in the Bihar Assembly, adding to its numerical advantage.
The defections come shortly after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar secured a vote of confidence in the Bihar Assembly, solidifying the JDU-BJP government's position. In the recent floor test, 129 votes were cast in favor, reaching 130 when the Speaker's vote was included. With the addition of the three newly joined MLAs, the NDA alliance has further consolidated its strength. Additionally, as Bihar gears up for biennial elections for 11 seats in the Legislative Council, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's seat, the defections may impact the political landscape in the state.
